Harbor at First Light

Ellison painted this from the end of a pier, then repainted the horizon twice. The water is sage, pewter, and a little raw umber. Nothing in it is trying to be picturesque.

The linen stays visible in the sky. That thinness is the point: first light, before the harbor has decided what color it is.
